Join Clearwater
Audubon and the Rotary Centennial Nature Center at Honeymoon Island for
a fun filled and informative morning. Learn birding basics, the right way!
Subjects covered: Use of field guides, checklists, field gear & optics,
basic viewing tips, bird ID including a focus on water birds. Meet some
great birders who will guide you along the way, and present some keen insights
and inspiration.
Activities include hands-on
demonstrations, a slide presentation, viewing of water birds at low tide
on St. Joseph Sound, and a 90 minute guided walk through the pine forest
on the Osprey Trail. Observe an extensive Osprey nesting area, and view
a wide variety of species in varied habitats on this 7000 year old barrier
island!
Complimentary morning coffee and
donuts, trail snacks, bottled water, binoculars, field guides and a day
pack for your use during the program will be provided. Take home materials
include an exclusive Honeymoon Island Bird Checklist, and a full color
laminated Bird ID folding field guide. You will also receive an information
packet to familiarize you with the birding world, local organizations and
activities.
The panoramic views of St. Joseph
Sound from the huge nature center observation deck are outstanding! There
are over 20 Osprey nests located on the island.

We will start in the nature center classroom with presentations on the
7 steps to bird identification, field guides, optics and an excellent Power
Point presentation on Common Birds of Honeymoon Island. We will then move
to the nature center deck for some shorebird identification and then move
on to the Osprey Trail (located at picnic area) for more bird watching
in the pine flatwoods utilizing what was taught in the classroom.

which includes training materials, water and snacks.

old are invited to attend with an adult - It's fun!

Session at Nature Center:
Shorebirding
Sessions on the Nature Center Observation Deck
– You may arrive earlier than the low-tide time to observe birds arriving
as the mud flat becomes exposed. (Park opens at 8am, nature center building
opens at 9am) Spotting scope will be set-up for viewing at 9am. Bring
binoculars, field guide, and water, not recommended for children under
12. No pets please. Standard park admission fees apply.
